Meet Michael Acheampong, an NHS Mental Health Nurse who kick-started his career with the Access to Higher Education course at Barnfield College.

After working in the field of Marketing for some years, Michael desired a career change but was unsure on where to start. On his journey of re-discovery, he found an interest in the world of healthcare and sought knowledge on how he could retrain.

Following advice and guidance provided by the college, Michael found that an Access course was the ideal fit for him as he lacked the formal qualifications that he needed to step straight into university.

Motivated by his new goal, Michael enrolled on the Access course in Social Sciences, he says, “It’s not every day you have the opportunity to go back to college and do what you really want to do!”

This course was Michael’s opportunity to get back into education, build up his confidence and get one step closer to his chosen career. He was able to acquire the industry knowledge, develop academic skills and learn the technical skills he required for university.

During his time on the course, he discovered the wide range of jobs within the healthcare industry and set his sights on mental health nursing.

Following the completion of this course, Michael progressed to university to study BSc Mental Health Nursing and ultimately secured his dream of becoming a Mental Health Nurse within the NHS.
