Are you aged 19 or above and want to develop the skills you need to return to study?

This Gateway programme provides academic skills for those who have been out of education for a long time, in order to progress to a higher level of study here at college, before eventually progressing to university.

The course will prepare you for the Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health, Social Care or a related field, alternatively you can progress to GCSE study, depending on your intended destination and prior level of education.

  • Entry Criteria

    The pre-access programme is intended for students who want to work in Health and Social Care, but don't have the traditional qualifications to access work or degree level study.

    Applicants will be invited to take an initial assessment to ensure that they have suitable levels of English and maths required to complete the programme of study. If your English and/or maths skills aren't yet at the right level for this programme, we will work with you to identify English and/or maths courses that will help you develop these skills first.

  • What will I study?

    Course modules are varied and are primarily focused on getting you back into the swing of academic study. You'll work with our specialist tutors on the following modules.

    • Writing for different audiences and purposes, including academic writing, such as leaflets, posters and essays
    • Reading different texts with speed and accuracy, inclduing proof-reading, spelling and grammar
    • Mathematics skills development, including fractions, ratios and percentages
    • Problem solving
    • IT skills development, including internet research skills
    • Time-management and study skills
    • Psychology and counselling theory
    • Effective learning strategies and reflective practice
    • Biology, this includes body systems, skeleton and muscles
    • Research project on a subject of personal interest
    • Sociology theory, method and social policy, inclduing changes in health and social care legislation and Government
  • Future Prospects

    You'll be ready to progress on to a relevant Access to HE (Higher Education) course here at college.

    After completing your Access to HE diploma you will then be ready to head straight to university on to a degree of your choosing. It's important to do your research before getting started to make sure that your chosen university offers the degree you'd like to study and that you'll meet their specific entry requirements.
