Independent Support Worker
Meet Freda, a member of the Barnfield College alumni who starred in our ‘Becoming You’ promotional campaign.
Freda studied Level 3 Health and Social Care for two years in the hope of pursuing a career in the healthcare industry. Freda’s first impression of Barnfield stood out in comparison to other colleges – she was impressed by the mature learning environment and did not expect to have access to a fully-equipped mock hospital ward as part of her course, an impressive facility that our campus boasts.
As her time at Barnfield progressed, Freda found that her college experience changed her entire perspective. Her confidence grew due to the interactive nature of her lessons, allowing her to bond with her peers and teachers. Freda commented that many people, including her parents, "noticed a change" in her after she settled into college life – she became more mature, more confident in herself and more determined to achieve her dream of working in the health industry. One of Freda’s highlights of studying at Barnfield was a graduation ceremony that her teachers organised for her cohort as it allowed her to reflect on how her two years at college had shaped her.
In addition to her time on campus, Freda thoroughly enjoyed the experience on her NHS placement where she worked in a local hospital. She believed that this was the moment where “learning stopped feeling like learning” and where she could start implementing her skills in the real world – including taking blood pressure, CPR and communicating with patients.
Since graduating from Barnfield, Freda now works at Luton & Dunstable Hospital as an independent support worker. Freda believes that if she did not have the opportunity to learn at Barnfield, she might not have been picked for the job.
Freda is just one of many student success stories to come out of Barnfield College. If you feel inspired by her journey and want to follow in her footsteps, Barnfield is the place for you to study.
