Meet Ellen, one of our dedicated students currently working towards her goal of becoming a Maths teacher within the Further Education sector.
From the outset, Ellen had clear ambitions to become a teacher. Inspired by early conversations with course tutors at Barnfield College, she felt confident in taking the next step into teacher training.
As part of her studies, Ellen undertook a work placement at Barnfield College, where she gained valuable hands-on experience teaching maths to post-16 learners. She planned and delivered engaging lessons, adapted her teaching to support learners of varying abilities, monitored progress through assessment, and provided constructive feedback to support exam readiness. The placement strengthened her understanding of safeguarding, professional responsibilities, and quality assurance within FE, while helping her create a safe and respectful learning environment.
Ellen credits her placement with bridging the gap between theory and real classroom practice. Through observing experienced teachers, reflecting on feedback, and refining her approach, she has developed greater confidence, adaptability, and readiness for a teaching role.
As she completes her course this year, Ellen is preparing to progress into a Maths teaching position and aims to achieve QTLS status as she continues her career in Further Education.
She describes her Barnfield College experience as a “supportive environment that built my confidence, skills and professional identity.” Her advice to students considering the course is to trust yourself. While it may feel overwhelming at first, you will quickly grow into a professional teacher.
