Your First Look at College Life Starts Here

At Barnfield College, we do things differently.

Once you’ve applied for a school leaver course, the next key part of your application journey is attending a Course Introduction Meeting (CIM), a relaxed, friendly on-campus group session that helps you get to know about the course, the tutors and what college life is really like.

A CIM isn’t an interview. It’s your chance to decide whether Barnfield College is right for you.

Once you’ve attended and you’re happy with your choice, we’ll send you a conditional offer based on meeting the published entry requirements.

WHAT WE COVER AT A CIM

You'll get an introduction to your chosen course, including:

  • An overview of what you’ll study and how you’ll be assessed
  • Information about progression opportunities and where your course could take you next

You'll also hear about the wider Barnfield College experience, such as:

  • Work experience and industry placements
  • Financial support and bursaries
  • English and Maths support
  • Student wellbeing and pastoral services
  • Enrichment, activities and extra personal development opportunities

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR CIM

During the 30 - 40 minute group session, you can expect:

  • A warm welcome from our staff
  • A simple, high-level introduction to the course
  • A look at our facilities
  • Insight into what college life is like
  • Information on what happens next
  • Time to ask questions

Please note that parents and carers are more than welcome to attend their child’s CIM, but attendance is entirely optional.

 FAQs

  • Do I need to be invited to a CIM?

Yes. Once you’ve submitted your application, our Admissions team will process your application and send you an email invitation to attend a Course Introduction Meeting.

  • Do I need to prepare anything?

In most cases you don’t need to prepare anything for your CIMFor some subjects such as creative courses, there may be some additional requirements such as a practical task or skills showcase, but don’t worry - if this applies to you, your invitation email will include all the details you need.

  • Do I need to do an interview?

No - during your Course Introduction Meeting, you’ll join a small group of peers to meet tutors, ask questions, and learn about your course and the wider college experience. We don’t interview our applicants; we chose to allow you to interview us and ensure that the course is right for you.

  • Can I bring someone along?

Of course! While their attendance is optional, you’re more than welcome to bring a family member, parent, or carer along to your Course Introduction Meeting. Many students do, as it can be helpful to have someone with you when learning more about your course and making your decision.

  • How do I get to my CIM?

Please note that on-campus visitor parking is very limited and cannot be guaranteed. If the car park is full, you may need to use nearby public car parks or alternative travel options.

We recommend planning your journey in advance and using public transport where possible. Full details will be included in your invitation email.

  • What if I miss my CIM?

If you’re unable to attend or miss your CIM, please contact our Admissions team as soon as possible. We’ll do our best to make alternative arrangements for you.

Alternatively, you are welcome to attend one of our Open Days, where you can secure your offer of a place at college on the day if you meet the necessary requirements.

  • What are the next steps after attending a CIM?

After attending your Course Introduction Meeting, if you meet the entry criteria for your chosen course, we’ll send you an email confirming your offer.

Following this, we’ll keep in touch with updates and helpful information as you prepare to join us - including events, enrolment details, and exciting opportunities happening across the college!
