University of Hertfordshire
Meet Timeon, who recently studied the Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication at Barnfield College.
Timeon started his journey with us in 2017, when he joined at entry level on the Skills for Life course. Timeon has autism, which impacts his communication, speech, and articulation. This affects his social skills and sometimes his understanding of information or instructions. He spent two years in the Skills for Life department, progressing onto Level 1 Art & Design.
Having always had hopes of becoming a professional artist in the future, Timeon progressed through Level 2 and up to the Level 3 Art & Design course. During his time at college, he enjoyed developing a variety of artistic skills, including sculpting, ceramics and printmaking, as well learning about different types of artists.
The Level 3 course allowed Timeon to develop his communication skills, as well as his independence and study skills, alongside the support of the Additional Learning Support team. These skills have been of great benefit to Timeon, as he’s able to communicate with people in order to develop ideas, as well as travelling to gain inspiration for his art.
After completing his course, Timeon went onto to study Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire, where he is now in his second year of study. He praises his time at college for helping him to develop life skills and research strategies to help him at university.
Reflecting on his experience, Timeon explained that: “There will be hard and difficult times during the art course, but it will help you to gain valuable experiences”.
