Carer
Meet Michelle, a former student on the Access to Higher Education – Healthcare Professions course.
After moving to the UK from Zimbabwe, Michelle began working as a Carer in a nursing home—providing personal care, preparing meals, supporting residents with daily activities, and helping with mobility.
Inspired by a colleague who had studied at Barnfield College and progressed to university, Michelle decided to enrol on the Access to HE course to take the next step in her own career. Her goal was to continue her studies and make a greater impact in her community through healthcare.
Michelle praises the course for equipping her with vital academic skills such as essay writing, referencing, and preparing for university-level study. In addition to subject knowledge, she developed valuable skills including communication, time management, empathy, and care planning.
One of Michelle’s standout memories from the course was giving a presentation for the first time. “It was challenging, but I enjoyed it—it really helped me develop my confidence,” she recalls.
Reflecting on her time at college, Michelle shared: “The course helped me develop the skills I need for university. Barnfield College welcomes students from all backgrounds and cultures, and the support I received made a huge difference.”
Her advice to future students:
“Time management is very important—try to finish your assignments a week before the deadline. If you’re preparing for a healthcare career, aim to study four to five hours a day.”
