Our Health and Social Care students have recently completed a 100-hour work placement at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, gaining first-hand experience across a wide range of healthcare settings.
The placement began in non-clinical departments such as portering, maintenance, and stores. This initial stage provided students with a foundational understanding of hospital operations and highlighted the breadth of roles that support the NHS. It offered valuable insight into how every department—clinical or not—plays an essential role in ensuring the hospital runs smoothly. Following this introduction, the students transitioned to clinical placements across various wards, including medical and surgical units. Here, they worked alongside healthcare professionals, shadowing nurses and undertaking tasks typically performed by Healthcare Assistants. Under supervision, students developed confidence in performing a range of practical duties and enhanced their understanding of patient care.
During their placements, students were involved in supporting patients with personal care, including feeding and promoting wellbeing. They also received training in clinical skills such as using ECG machines, measuring vital signs, and performing CPR. The placement provided an opportunity for students to apply the theoretical knowledge they gained in class, particularly in areas such as safeguarding, communication, and observation. By engaging directly with patients and collaborating with NHS staff, they gained a deeper appreciation of the importance of confidentiality and person-centred care.
Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive:
“I’m so glad to have had this opportunity to get hands-on experience.”
“I’ve really enjoyed being on placement with the NHS; it’s helped me discover skills I didn’t know I had.”
“I felt like part of the team, contributing to making a real difference in people’s lives.”
“Experiencing the practical side of my course helped me understand what I want to do next.”
Sumiyyah, a Level 3 Health and Social Care tutor at Barnfield College, commented:
“The placement has given students a valuable opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in real-world settings. It’s been an important step in helping them become skilled, confident, and employment-ready.”
Abi, Clinical Educator at the Health and Care Academy, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, also praised the students’ professionalism and commitment:
“Working with Barnfield College has been excellent from the outset. The students were polite, professional, and eager to learn. They put their heart and soul into every task, which was fantastic to see.”
