GCSE Results Day – how can parents prepare?

We want to help parents and guardians to be fully prepared for GCSE Results Day by knowing what to expect, and what to do should your child need to change their plans.

Before results day

Your child’s school will have informed students of arrangements for results day. Generally, results can be collected directly from the school from 9am onwards though some schools may be open earlier/later.

No 4 (or C) in GCSE maths and/or English?

It’s now a requirement to retake both maths and English until a grade 4 or above (equivalent to a C on the old system) is achieved. Speak to school staff and ask what resit arrangements they have (usually held in November). Barnfield College’s study programmes incorporate English and maths as standard so alongside a full-time course, your child can also work towards their English and maths.

Results not as expected

If your child didn’t get the grades they were expecting, don’t worry, there are other options they can consider. Sometimes entry requirements are relaxed so speak to the school/college they applied to. If it’s time for something new, then you’ll need the right advice.

Vocational courses

If your child’s learning preference is producing coursework over sitting exams, then a vocational course would suit them better as they are designed to prepare
you for a career in an industry of choice, with practical and work experience built in.
You can view our range of courses online.

Earn while you learn with an Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship will allow your child to study for a qualification while gaining practical experience working in their chosen industry.
Check vacancies on the National Apprenticeships Service website.
