Meet our #IWantToBe competition winner!

We recently ran a competition inviting people to post selfies on social media along with #IWantToBe and their aspirations for their future careers. The prize for the selected winner was an incredible Apple Watch! The competition attracted some interesting entries, the highlights of which have been shared on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We selected our lucky winner, and we are pleased to have met with him recently to present his prize! Introducing, newly-enrolled Barnfield College student, Niall Junke, 16, from Luton, who wants to be a Tattoo Artist!

“I couldn’t believe it when [Barnfield] contacted me to say I had won!” Niall said. “You never expect to win these things, or it’s some kind of trick and you win a picture of a watch or something!”

Niall’s selfie showed him practising tattooing on a training surface at his former place of employment, Red Inc in Luton town centre.

“I worked there for a year as a Receptionist and general assistant as voluntary work experience at first,” he explained. Although hired on a temporary basis initially, the Manager at Red Inc became so impressed with Niall’s work and enthusiasm that they offered to keep him on part-time.

Niall also expressed an interest in contributing design work for the team at Red Inc, and has since taken on freelance tattoo design in his free time. It was this experience that lead to Niall choosing to study Art & Design at Barnfield College in order to help him reach his goal of becoming a Tattoo Artist.

Niall has joined us this academic year from Lealands High school, having completed his GCSEs including Art & Design this summer.

Niall expected that he would join us to study Level 1 Art & Design, however he was bumped straight up to Level 2 due to his aptitude and passion for the subject.

“When I visited the College, I thought the facilities had a very impressive overall look and feel,” he said. “I was also impressed by the staff I met before enrolling.”

He has bravely joined Barnfield College as the only member of his circle of friends based at our New Bedford Road Campus. But that hasn’t worried Niall.

“If I had to describe my experience at Barnfield so far, I’d say ‘enjoyable’, ‘fun’, and ‘calming’. Joining a new college could have been overwhelming but the staff have made the experience very calming.

“My tutor Kwasi [Owusu] stood out especially as very friendly and welcoming, and I’ve already made some of the best friends yet.

“I’m already really enjoying my time here. I study here 4 days a week with 2 half days, but on my days off, I actually feel like I want to be in College!”

Niall now has a plan for how to achieve his ambition of becoming a Tattoo Artist. Niall wishes to seek part-time employment alongside his studies in Customer Service type role in order to increase his confidence in dealing with the public, and is practising his tattoo skills on fruit as well as continuing freelance tattoo design commissions. After completing his Level 2 Art & Design at Barnfield College, Niall intends to complete his Level 3, before returning to work at Red Inc as a Trainee Tattoo Artist.

We wish Niall the best of luck both at Barnfield and in his future career!
