Helen Woollams, a fashion tutor at Barnfield College, is Britain’s Top Designer 2016.
Britain’s Top Designer is a cutting edge fashion designer competition hosted by Fashions Finest which takes place during London Fashion Week each year, aiming to find the best emerging designer in the UK.
Helen teaches 3 days a week at Barnfield, and the rest of the time she can be found creating new designs in her studio under her label Hellavagirl.
She entered Britain’s top designer in ‘a moment of madness’ inspired by a friend.
The final of Britain’s Top Designer required Helen to showcase a capsule ladies collection of 6 designs, together with her brand ethos, her portfolio and her biography. The judging was rigorous taking into consideration the concept, the designs, the quality of the materials, workmanship and the labelling.
The three finalists showcased all six designs on the catwalk, so their fit, flow and movement could be judged. Finally, Helen was announced the winner to the cheering audience.
Helen commented “the other finalists were so talented; I was happy to have even reached the final”.
Despite her hectic time at London Fashion Week, Helen was straight back in the classroom with her students, the next morning, not wanting to miss classes as she loves teaching.
Barnfield College Vice-principal, Shagufta Shahin was delighted for Helen, “How amazing is it that we have Britain’s best designer working here at the College. What a huge privilege for our learners. Full of pride!”
Helen, who studied at the London College of Fashion, has ambitions for her label, Hellavagirl, and already has boutiques on ASOS and Not Just a Label and has also been invited to show at New York Fashion Week in September.
