Tutorial

Barnfield College aims to provide all learners with the guidance and learning support needed to enable them to 'achieve their personal, educational and employment goals.' The tutorial process is a key element in this support programme.

All full time and substantive part time learners will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of the academic year. The tutorial process will consist of at least three one-to-one interviews per year and a programme of group tutorial.

In the case of learners on short courses or evening study there is no formal tutorial programme, however the personal tutor is expected to provide the information, advice and review that will enable these learners to access college guidance, IT and support services where appropriate.

Aims of Tutorial

The aims of tutorial are to remove barriers to the retention and achievement of learners and to assist in meeting the outcomes of Every Child Matters. It will also meet the needs of learners by helping them to:

  • Manage the transition from school, work or unemployment to college.
  • Be fully informed about the activities, opportunities and support services provided by Barnfield College.
  • Develop independence, confidence, self-esteem and 'life skills'.
  • Achieve their personal learning goals.
  • Manage the transition from college to employment or higher education.
