Barnfield College is launching a major volunteer scheme under the v talent year programme.
The initiative will see up to 30 full-time volunteers recruited over the next two years, backed by a skilled support worker to run the programme.
The scheme is funded by a £280,000 grant from v, The National Young Volunteers' Service, and follows research showing that 1 in 3 young people would consider full-time volunteering.
The volunteers, aged 16-25, will work in learner support services. Barnfield is one of a small number of colleges in England chosen for this national programme.
Pete Birkett, Chief Executive of Barnfield College, said: "We're delighted to be launching this innovative scheme, which will help volunteers develop skills while making a meaningful difference to the environment of Luton. This is a crucial part of our strategy to help young people develop new confidence and skills while giving something back to the community of Luton."
The participants will complete 30 hours of volunteering a week during the 44-week placement. They will be recruited locally with 40 per cent of places for young people not employed, in education or training.
Volunteers will also work towards a level 2 qualification. At the end of their placement, they can apply for a Personal Development Grant of up to £1,500. With their experience and qualification, volunteers will be well-placed for further training or employment.
The v talent year programme is part of v's wider full-time volunteering campaign, which has created 20,000 positions across England.
