Firefighting Skills on Display

19 August 2009

Seven students from Barnfield College Luton were put through their paces at a special skills display held at Luton Fire Station - watched over by former Barnfield graduates.

The display - which has run annually for 14 years - showcased the many essential firefighting skills learnt by the public services students in preparation for careers in the fire and rescue service.

The students put on energetic displays of hose running, hydrant connection, water pumping, ladder work, fitness, basic drills and rescue from buildings.

Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Graeme Smith said: "Working with young people is one of the key aims of our Fire and Recue Service.

"We hope the Fire and Rescue Service brand and the reputation of its firefighters will be an inspiration to young people and that they will consider joining us in their future careers."

A number of fire stations in Bedfordshire employ firefighters who have graduated from the well-regarded Barnfield public services courses.
