19+ Advanced Learning Loans

Look out for the Loan symbol next to each course to see whether you can apply for a loan for your chosen course.

If you are aged 19 and over and want to undertake a Level 3 or above course or advanced/higher level apprenticeship you can access the funds you need through a 19+ adult learning loan, similar to Higher Education (HE) loans.

Am I eligible?

To qualify you’ll need to be:

  • Aged 19 or over at the start of your course
  • A resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of your course
  • Enrolling on a course at Level 3 or above, such as: A-Levels, Diplomas and Certificates, Advanced Apprenticeships or Higher Apprenticeships, Access to HE.

How do they work?

The loans are not means tested or credit checked and as long as you meet the criteria you will be able to apply for a loan, whether you’re employed or unemployed. The loan will then be paid directly to the College on your behalf.

How do I apply?

If you want to apply for a loan, we will supply you with the relevant information to make your application. You can apply online or complete the necessary forms. You will receive a letter confirming your loan usually within 2 weeks if you apply online.

When will I have to pay it back?

You don’t pay anything up front for your course fees and until you are earning over £21,000, you won’t pay anything back either. Repayments do not start until April 2016 and your repayments stop if your income drops below £21,000 a year. For Apprenticeships, the student and employer are expected to share the costs of the course 50:50, so your loan would only be for half the course cost. If your loan is for an Access to HE programme and you go on to complete an HE course, you won’t have to repay your FE loan at all.
