Entry Requirements
Applicants are advised that this course is only funded for those aged 19 + and is best suited to the needs of adults/mature learners who are returning to education and wish to progress onto a degree in Art & Design or other related degree courses. Applicants must demonstrate a sound general education. GCSE grades are not necessary but_ applicants must successfully complete the entry tests in Literacy and Numeracy and demonstrate the ability to cope with the demands of the course in interview.

The main purpose of completing an Access course is for you to be able to progress into Higher Education. You could also consider apprenticeship or employment at junior level.
Additional Information
Lecturers on the course are experienced Higher Education tutors with a breadth of industry knowledge across a diverse range of careers including fine art practice, 3D design, branding and illustration. And, unique to Barnfield College, Fashion pathway students will be taught by a tutor who independently runs a well-known, successful fashion label.
ABOUT THE COURSE
The course aims for you to explore a range of Art & Design disciplines whilst developing your literacy and communication skills. You will determine your strengths and choose your career path within a specialist area of Art & Design, whilst developing the skills needed for Higher Education. You will build an appropriate portfolio within your chosen specialism within a stable, supportive and inclusive learning environment, working in generous studio spaces where you will receive regular tutor contact and support from specialist tutors. This course will help you develop your literacy and numeracy skills which will help you to progress on to a higher level course or employment. You will have regular access to relevant specialist workshops and equipment with specialist technical support. You will be taken on regular gallery visits and there is an overseas residential visit each year. The course will also teach transferable skills such as communication and presentation skills. You will learn skills in IT and computer aided design packages, problem solving and how to generate ideas for a brief. The course is comprised of three stages over the three terms:
Stage 1: Introduction to Learning Skills and Context - You will explore disciplines such as Fine Art, Fashion, Printmaking, Textiles, Ceramics, 3D Design, Computer Aided Design, Contextual Studies, Visual Studies, Graphic Design, Lens Based Media and Illustration.
Stage 2: Introduction to Development and Progression - You will specialise in a chosen area of Art & Design, and produce a portfolio of work for Higher Education applications. This will be supported by specialist workshops and demonstrations.
Stage 3: Introduction to Final Major Project - Proposal and Realisation - This will be your Final Major Project –You will write your own project and make work for your end of year exhibition. This will be the culmination of all your learning, skill and knowledge acquisition from the whole course.
