18 years old or over; one A Level, preferably in a creative subject or a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design or an equivalent Level 3 qualification. Five GCSEs grade 4 or above.

You may choose to progress on to a relevant Level 4 qualification such as an HNC or Foundation degree. You may choose university, or seek an apprenticeship or employment.

Lecturers on the course are experienced Higher Education tutors with a breadth of industry knowledge across a diverse range of career paths including Design, owning own fashion brands, Branding, Editorial Design and Illustration so you can benefit from industry knowledge and links. You will also benefit from working with the wider HE staff and students team linking with other Art & Design disciplines, much like you will upon graduation. You will be taken on regular gallery visits and there is an overseas residential visit each year. Previous trips have included Barcelona, Berlin, Florence and Lisbon.
The main aim is for you to explore and experiment in a wide range of art and design disciplines, and to determine your individual strengths and aid the decision of you choosing your career path within a specialist area of Art or Design. You will build an appropriate portfolio of work within your chosen specialism and receive expert advice and guidance. The course will give you a stable, supportive and inclusive learning environment with exciting projects and sessions. You will work in generous studio spaces where you will receive regular tutor contact and support from specialist tutors. You will have regular access to relevant specialist workshops and equipment with specialist technical support. The Art and Design Foundation Diploma will also teach you many transferable skills such as communication and presentation skills. You will learn many skills in the use of IT and computer aided design packages. The skills of problem solving to specific issues you have during a project and how to generate ideas for a particular brief. The course is structured of three stages over the three terms: - Stage 1 (Learning Skills and Context): You will explore disciplines as diverse as Fine art, Fashion, Printmaking, Textiles, Ceramics, 3D design, Computer aided design, Contextual Studies, Visual Studies, Graphic Design, Lens Based Media and Illustration. - Stage 2 (Development and Progression): You will specialise in chosen area of Art & Design, and produce a portfolio of work for individual Higher Education application. This will be supported by specialist workshops and demonstrations. - Stage 3 (Final Major Project - Proposal and Realisation): This will be your Final Major Project. You will write your own project and make work for your end of year exhibition. This will be the culmination of all your learning, skill and knowledge acquisition from the Foundation diploma. At this stage your work will be marked at Level 4.
