APPRENTICESHIPS

An apprenticeship is a great alternative to full-time study if you want to learn on-the-job, and a stepping stone to a career or a route into university. As an apprentice at Barnfield College, you’ll get all the benefits of studying with us whilst working with an employer in an industry of your choice.

If you’re just starting your career, an apprenticeship is an opportunity to get paid whilst learning work-related skills and gaining a nationally recognised qualification. If you’re already in work, an apprenticeship could allow you to gain recognition for your current competence and boost your skills to help you progress further in your career.

Am I eligible?

Apprenticeships are open to anyone 16 or above, living in the UK and not in full-time education. However, if you have achieved degree-level qualifications or above, you will not be eligible for Apprenticeship funding.

What qualifications do I need?

As a general rule of thumb, employers expect you to have achieved GCSEs at grade 4 or C or above in English and maths, and/or A Levels. However, some employers may accept lower grades providing you can demonstrate the ability to work at that level.

What kind of support can I expect?

Alongside a structured training programme, you’ll be allocated a personal assessor to support you throughout your apprenticeship. As well as the work-related skills you need for your job, you’ll also work on your English and maths, which are essential to progress in any career.

Which areas do you offer Apprenticeships in?

We work with local and national companies offering apprenticeships in both the private and public sectors, in areas including:

  • Accounting
  • Aviation
  • Barbering
  • Business and administration
  • Catering
  • Childcare
  • Construction
  • Customer service
  • Dental nursing
  • Electrical engineering
  • Exercise and fitness
  • Hairdressing
  • Health and social care
  • IT and telecoms
  • Plumbing
  • Retail
  • Spa Therapy
  • Teaching support
  • Vehicle maintenance and repair

How long does an Apprenticeship last?

Apprenticeships vary in length depending on the qualification, level, sector and your previous experience. This can be between one year for some frameworks and up to four years for more complex frameworks such as Engineering.

What study options are there?

With study options ranging from on-campus to work-based learning and community-based courses, we’ll help you choose the path that’s right for you. And no matter how long it’s been since you left education, our expert teaching staff and fantastic student support network will put you on the right track to success.

Am I eligible to do an Apprenticeship if I’m currently working?

Yes, you can become an apprentice for your current employer. Ask your employer to contact Barnfield Apprenticeship Service and we can help you get this set up.

How do I apply for an Apprenticeship?

Vacancies are available all year round, so you can apply for an apprenticeship at any time. Check out our live Apprenticeship vacancies below, or alternatively, you can apply directly via the Government Apprenticeship website.
