Barnfield is championing sustainable resourcesBarnfield is championing sustainable resources

The staff environment committee has done some first-class work in recent years, pro-actively identifying environmental issues at the College and deciding solutions.

  • The Chief Executive has initiated a ground-breaking Smart Car Programme through the Association of Colleges which will reduce the FE sector's impact on the environment and save colleges thousands of pounds. Under the scheme, unveiled at the last AoC conference, colleges will "bulk-buy" Smart Cars though the AoC, attracting considerable discounts. With many colleges operating on separate campuses, the Smart Cars will also save thousands of pounds in petrol consumption. Barnfield has taken delivery of its first Smart Car under the scheme.
  • The Chief Executive has signed the Further Education Colleges' Sustainable Development Declaration, committing the College to championing sustainable resources, using our resources prudently and establishing high environmental standards for our buildings. These standards are being applied in our £160 million group new build.
  • The College has adopted ambitious recycling plans with the goal of nearly quadrupling our recycling rate over the next two years. The present rate of 13 per cent will be increased to about 50 per cent.
  • With the assistance of waste disposal partner Luton Borough Council, red cardboard recycling bins have been installed across the four Luton campuses in high paper use areas. The programme may be extended further.
  • Recycling measures are under review at Westbourne Road Campus.
  • Energy consumption, purchasing and other activities are under review with an eye to their environmental impact.
